Isle Of Portland Orchids

Summer must have arrived as the first of Portland's Bee Orchids are flowering. This lovely plant is near the Wild Chesil Centre. May is here and the season for seeing native UK orchids in the wild is with us again. Portland's Early Purple orchids are the first to flower on the Island and are looking perfect this week.  It is more usual to find this species as a woodland plant but on Portland (with little woodland) they live in scrubby grassland and this year the flowering plants are all in amongst brambles that have kept them safe from grazing.
